              What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the ancient Chinese art of balance and harmony, and has been around for over 3,000 years. The theory of acupuncture revolves around a network of energy channels known as meridians. There are over 71 know meridians in the human body, which are located just below the surface of the skin. Your body’s natural energy known as Qi is said to flow thru such channels. Every bodily organ is associated with a specific meridian, and when your Qi becomes “stuck” or is unable to flow freely to the different regions of the body traditional Chinese thought believes the body is put into a disharmony which is the cause for what ails you.

              Acupuncture & Modern Medicine

Acupuncture is most often done with the use of very fine needles. The human body perceives the acupuncture needles as a stimulus. A stimulus is defined as anything that the body may detect internally or externally and react accordingly to. This stimulus is what is responsible for the movement of the “stuck” Qi.

Recent studies using brain MRI’s have shown activity in regions of the brain when acupuncture needles are inserted to corresponding acupuncture points throughout the body. New research is even now pointing to the ability of acupuncture point’s ability to stimulate the central nervous system (which is composed of the spinal cord and brain). This leads to the ability to control pain and balance the body.
